Why do you need a bridesmaid on your wedding day

A bridesmaid is a loyal friend at your side. She is there to celebrate the bride's happiness, to be an ear when needed, someone who will get out of her way if she needs the bathroom, hold the groom's jacket if it starts raining right after he leaves for his "bachelor party", keep little Jimmy from dropping the rings, and keep the bride's dress from dragging on the floor. And of course she is there to take pictures!

Traditionally, bridesmaids were chosen from family members. Now they can be anyone you choose- co-workers, friends, and even random strangers off the street. But you should carefully consider who you want to be your bridesmaids and what their responsibilities will entail before asking them to be part of the wedding party.

Of course, not everyone is cut out for the job. Here are some Do's and Don'ts when choosing a bridesmaid:

Do choose the bridesmaid:

1. Who is always there for you- the true bridesmaid spirit is knowing when to be there, how to cheer someone up and what to say just by the look on their face. They're always someone you can call at 2 in the morning to talk about how much your aunt is driving you nuts with her non-stop planning… The natural bridesmaid will know how to make you feel better in any situation!

2. To wear whatever you want- the best bridesmaids are those who will wear whatever you tell them to without too much of a fight. The wedding isn't about their outfits and no matter if they're the nicest people in the world, they will do whatever you want them to.

3. Who knows how to get along with everyone- having a bridesmaid who is good at talking to strangers and making friends is always a plus! They make it easier for everyone else to feel comfortable and they make sure no one feels awkward during the ceremony.

4. Who isn't going to cause a problem- if you have a friend who is going to call your best guy "just a friend" or anything of that nature, then they're not worth it. Even if they do mean well by it, problems are bound to arise and it's better to not even risk anything.

5. Who doesn't see limitations- your friend who knows how to make a wedding a fun, memorable experience will do whatever you need at the time and won't complain about it later. They know their limits and they won't be trying to push them for any reason!

Don't choose a bridesmaid who:

1. Isn't your friend- some people just don't mix well together, and this is especially true when it comes to weddings. If you really want someone as a bridesmaid who doesn't seem like the best choice for a friend, then do some serious thinking as to why that person should be part of your wedding party.

2. Has never been your friend- if this is the case, it might be wiser to look elsewhere for a bridesmaid. It will be difficult for you to have any kind of meaningful relationship with someone who has never felt close enough to share secrets or cry on each other's shoulders. Wedding days are full of emotion, and you want to have at least one person in the wedding party that you know would drop everything they're doing just because you asked them too.

3. Is not dependable- weddings are unpredictable events. People get stressed out, flaky, irritable over little things, get sick or injured… You need to have someone at your wedding who can deal with these kinds of issues without getting frazzled themselves. Depending on a bridesmaid who has a bad attitude towards these kinds of problems will only cause more stress on you and the rest of your wedding party.

4. Is not good at following directions- no matter how much experience your friend may have taking pictures, it is still important that they do what you tell them to do during the processions and reception! More experience does not always mean better in this case. You need someone who listens well enough that they can follow directions even if they are being given by someone else besides yourself, even when things get hectic it's no use having a bridesmaid who gets so flustered that they start dropping things!

5. Take things too seriously- weddings and big events like these should be celebrated and remembered, but no one wants to remember how stressed out everyone was getting over little details (like where the bridesmaids are supposed to stand, etc.). If you have a friend that takes everything too seriously, then leave them out of it.

6. Has never been your friend- while this may seem like an obvious choice not to choose someone as your bridesmaid who has never even tried being close to you before, there are some cases where people have bad feelings towards one another for whatever reason- family or otherwise. Even if the person in question isn't necessarily fond of you, they still should try during wedding preparations! While they don't have to be your best friend by any means, having someone who at least pretends to get along with everyone is better than nothing.

7. Doesn't fit into any other category- this could seem like an obvious choice, but there are always people who just don't mesh with everyone and everything about your wedding day might not seem right if they're involved. Every bride and groom has different opinions and tastes when it comes to things like these…

Conclusion

It is an honor to be chosen as a bridesmaid and it is important to remember that the bride is relying on you to help make her day perfect. Being a part of the wedding party can be a lot of work, but it is also a lot of fun. Make sure to enjoy every minute of it! Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials.
